Official: MySpace Cuts 500, 47% Of Staff

image from pinkygonzales.com In an official statement today, MySpace CEO Mike Jones confirmed that about 500 employees will be cut globally. “With our recent relaunch as an entertainment destination for Gen Y, we introduced a much tighter focus, a significantly streamlined product and an updated technology platform,” according to Jones. The cuts come at the same time that parent NewsCorp has been publicly searching for a buyer for MySpace.

“Today’s tough but necessary changes were taken in order to provide the company with a clear path for sustained growth and profitability,” Jones said in the statement adding that the cuts should not reflect on the performance of MySpace's new design and focus. “The new organizational structure will enable us to move more nimbly, develop products more quickly, and attain more flexibility on the financial side.”

  1. disagree. myspace was and still is synonymous with spam. this is something that facebook has kept a lid on from the beginning, which will extend their relevance and user loyalty for a long time to come.

  2. I agree.
The door is WIDE open for something similar but without the privacy issues.
As an aside, I still kind of miss the pre-Murdoch MySpace. Wonder if there’s any chance someone would buy it at a bargain-basement price and REALLY remodel it…

  3. Facebook kept a lid on it, up until about 6 months ago.
Now they’ve changed it so you get notifications every time Joe the Plumber invites you to his gig in Timbuktu, and messages every time he wants to tell you that tickets are selling fast. It’s starting to resemble myspace a few years back, and I’m getting slightly concerned…
I’d say that right now on facebook, 8/10 of the messages I get are spam.

  4. no mr know it all courtney is still on staff. too bad too, sam wick should have taken that shit over!
